Did you know "Trapped In The Closet," chapters 1-12, was nominated for a Grammy in 2006?
Shit's weird, I know.
(That so did not stop us that summer when I lived on campus to watch it religiously. VH1 aired chapters 1-6 every night back for a whole week, and we totally parked it on my sofa armed with beer to wash down all those bad puns.)
Once word got out at work today that this used to be my cell phone ring, we started poking around the internet and found out there is gonna be an installment of Chapters 23-32 (yes, you read that right) released this summer. We are so having a screening party for this.
I actually just tried to find his PR agency's information to email them and find out the right date, but then was reminded that he, like, you know, totally messed that up for good. Oops.
I was talking about how when I saw Death Cab last week Becca and I noticed the shaving down of Mr. Gibbard's body, and now I was able to finally see his face. Hello cheek bones! Where are the glasses? The scruff? The...brooding? THE HAIR?
By no means was Ben fat but when you're accustomed to seeing someone one way and love them and then see them when they look like they should be eating corn dogs daily, it's a bit of a trip.
Bonus points for Chris Walla to be wearing the Mister Rogers ensemble though!
Some observations, musings, and notes from this week and more in my musical alliances:
- The Killers were at the NSSN pre-party (of which Cold War Kids dominated), just wandering around to watch the show. Dude Ronnie, what happened to your hair?! Holy receding hairline Batman...
- Saw Brandon Flowers use the bathroom upstairs in the backstage area. I didn't actually see him pee or anything, but watching a rock star go in and out of a bathroom like a regular person is definitely funny. (Plus, everyone I talked to about NSSN all agreed on one thing: homeboy somehow got hot in between '06 and '08 and it showed. Holy tight pants.)
- I got to witness our band send-off when they take stage at Mezzanine; the members line up on the stairs backing the curtains and then shuffle on stage. It was really neat to see both sides of the curtain from where I was standing backstage.
- NSSN: Ben Gibbard, what the fuck?! He lost about a good 70 pounds (picture from RS @ Coachella) and sorta looked like Nikolai from the Strokes from where we were sitting. He's just so...lean now. It was a little odd. As Becca so eloquently put it, "Manerexic!" We both didn't recognize him when he popped up on stage, but Death Cab totally ruled last night. Doing acoustic "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" was a ballsy move at a arena radio show, but it was spot on. And "Cath," of course, was fucking beautiful live. I totally get shattered every time I hear that song (which was playing in this bar Danielle and I went to on Tuesday, bonus points Pilsner Inn).
- Chris Walla also looked like Mister Rogers' son with a orange sweater vest, white collared long sleeved shirt, and tight slack combo last night.
- Hot dude from Music for Animals at the local band competion - come to Mexico with us!!
- I did my end of year lists for The Tripwire on Monday: best albums, singles, videos, headlines, and shows of 2008. We should be running them sometime next week I think. We also had to do a best of 1998 records list, so I obviously employed Wendy to help me out. We sat over sushi in Fremont and lamented how much we used to be into Destiny's Child and Goo Goo Dolls...
- Russell from Bloc Party: why do I still have a stupid crush on you!? Grr...
- Drummer from Franz Ferdinand did our NSSN afterparty at popscene and was super wasted, getting on the mic every so often to whoop to his DJ selections and yell. It was highly amusing.
- Related: Alex Kapranos, still as beautiful as ever! I brushed against him last night while at pop and was struck by his beauty. Seriously, really pretty.
- Speaking of hotness, we got the new glossy flyers for the Scissors For Lefty New Year's Day show, and husband looks gorgeous! I'm bummed Kristin and I won't be here for it, but, you know, we're kinda gonna be in the U.K...
- Tonight I am seeing Alanis Morrissette. Is it weird to be oddly excited about that?
- I realized the other day I have seen wallpaper. nine times this year, the last being for the pop/Mezz Orphan's Ball rigt before Thanksgiving...this is a problem...
Who am I kidding, I still love this video:
All my clips to come next week, now I must somehow pull my brain off the floor and function...fucking three hours of sleep...
Oh, yeah - I got to see this hotness up close on Friday:
Holy hell.
(P.S. Sweets, I can take better pictures than this. C'mon now. How did this photographer manage to make you completely un-hot? I am convinced I can do much better. And for free. Please call me so I can remedy this.)
You know, I have loads of indie rock crushes. Loads. In general, I have crushes on a lotta dudes. And my friends. And assorted puppies. Anyway, maybe I do have a type when it comes to guys, and I think it started with this guy. Blue eyes, great smile, and amazing hair. And while it's true I think #'s 5, 12, and 27 on my crush list are creatures of near perfection, seeing Joey McIntyre in person on Friday pretty much solidified in my heart that he is the epitome of beauty. He is so impeccably gorgeous, it kinda hurts. Absolutely stunning.
I really don't think I'll get over it.
Anyway, yeah...clip below...I'll swoon some more when I can gather my thoughts on the sheer pandemonium that happened Friday. Thank you for coming back, 1989.

Live - MSTRKRFT @ Mezzanine | SF
Why do lots of good things have no vowels – New York band MGMT, myths, rhythm, VCRs? Canadian DJ heroes MSTRKRFT qualify for the category, but do they win my heart like that song "Electric Feel"? Here are my five favorite things from last week's show:
5. Everyone else was denied access to the stage – and we mean
everyone. From the enthusiastic dancers that were swooped off to the
blond who tried to hug Jesse Keeler while he was in the middle of – oh,
I don't know, a concert – they all got promptly shown the stairs down
from center stage. I don't think there was enough room for them and
Keeler's moustache anyway. (more....)
Uh, yeah. Journey in my hood in September, alongside Heart and Cheap Trick. Did I just not talk about the insanity of the holy 80s Batman machine? I'm trying to convince all my friendies to buy lawn tickets so we can get hammered and cry during "Faithfully." It's all already too much for words. And the funny thing is, every person I have told about this show has literally screamed, "OH MY GOD. I HAVE TO CALL/TAKE MY DAD TO THIS SHOW." It's really, really fucking awesome. Thank you dads who had kids in the 80s, you have officially breeded a new generation of hardcore Journey fans.
Continuing on, Dr. Pepper announced to the NYDN that the company will give every person in America a can of the "new and improved" soda if Axl Rose releases that one Guns N' Roses album he's been trying to make for the past 10 years. Are they insane? Best marketing ploy ever, for sure, but I mean...what do you even drink with Dr. Pepper? Stoli? Captain Morgan's? A big stew of cornrows?
I'm sorry I have been M.I.A. for the past week and a half or so, it's been nuts in Jenzyland. I'll have clips and such to post tomorrow, but for now, I will leave you with pictures of my two new boyfriends in indie rock/DJ haps:
Top: Sweden's finest. Bottom: new superstar DJ. Yeah, I'm so tragic.
First of all, George Michael in June?? Seriously?????????
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently, it's for the first time in 17 years (which is no too shy of my age, yikes), and is shaping up to be a farewell tour of sorts. Let's just hope I can hear some fucking "All She Wants" uninterrupted and that the GM doesn't pull a Babs and goes on like 17 farewell tours. Phew.
Speaking of:
Anyway, it's been attack of the 80s recently, which makes me grateful to have the chance to be able to see the bands I got into while growing up and in college, but is also bummed; I was so born in the wrong decade. In more concert news, The Police are playing in July with Elvis Costello and the Imposters (!!) opening, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are headling the Outside Lands Festival in August. How cool would it have been to see these bands in their element when they were popular?
Speaking of the OLF (my new acronym for the Outside Lands Festival), Beck has also been confirmed to play, and I almost fell off my chair Monday when I found out. Radiohead and the love of my fake Scientology life? I'm into it.
- and watching the video about nine times. Best morning ever. I wish Pop-Up Video was still around.
I had my wallet stolen about a month ago, and finally have been able to pick up the pieces; Noise Pop and my friendies definitely helped with that, so this is a public shout out to them too.
Today I went down to Virgin to buy the cutest wallet I've ever seen:
The inside is reverse polka dot with a secret zipper compartment. FUCK WITH ME NOW, THIEVES.
Anyway, while I was at the counter I happened to look over to a little stand while my credit card was authorizing, and went, "Hmm. That looks like Justin Timberlake on that box." Then I thought, "Hmm, what a nice red bow." And then I started to uncontrollably laugh.
They are selling "Dick In a Box" as a novely gift, with the tag line "We provide the box. You provide the rest."
True love, for sure.
A quick recap of this week:
- Been working on a personal portfolio shoot, and had to miss Nicole Atkins & The Sea on Monday...I saw her perform on Craig Ferguson last night, and I am fucking bummed I missed "Maybe Tonight" live and her high kicks. Come back, please...
- Also found out that my teenhood crush A.J. McLean is apparently performing at the House of Blues in Anaheim in March, which is so nuts considering he used to have an alter-ego but is not performing as such. Is A.J. going solo? Do I need to dust off my BSB sleep tees? It's too much for words.
- And, of course, speaking of too much for words, Radiohead's confimed to play the Outside Lands Festival, which I first found about approx two weeks ago and held off on saying anything about, because I didn't know if I was going to be heartstruck through the mouth if it ended up not being true. But yes, the RH and motherfucking Petty are confirmed as well some surfer, so I'm stoked. This is everyone's official invitation who's reading this to crash at my house and for the BBQ/food bonzanza before, since I live about three blocks away from Golden Gate Park. The show is also five days after my birthday, so a happy early belated one to me!
Now to figure out some food...
One of my favorite bands ever, Margot & The Nuclear So and So's, are posting blogs about their new record's studio progress as well as some sweet pictures taken with the Apple Photobooth program. I am so illimitably in love with this group, it's totally worth a read. Richard Edwards is an indie-rock boyfriend, after all...
Anyway, the new album (tentatively called Animal!) should be out this year, and I am beyond stoked. Just wanted to share.
Also, Nylon Magazine made a documentary on The Horrors, who played popscene last June - it debuted at Sundance last weekend, and upon further inspection, we the pop team saw about half the film trailer take place at our show!! So insane. World famous, we are!
And, lastly, Danielle and I went to see Ryan Adams last night at Zellerbach in Berkeley. I photographed the show and am supposed to be writing a review for tomorrow's Tripwire edition, but right now I can't even seriously put into words (a) the sheer magnitude of the greatness of this show, (b) how impeccably hilarious Dr. Adams is, and (c) how flawless both the ballads and rock'n'roll tunes were. Ugh. So good, I even made a photo tribute. More to come...
Did you know I used to have this poster in my room as a wee young teen?
I know people will give me shit about this, but I don't care. I admit I fell into the boy band craze, and I emerged six years later relatively okay. Sometimes I have relapses and do stuff like go see the Backstreet Boys host Toys For Tots as a 23 year-old, but that is a story for another time. Besides, like I've said before, it was my first introduction into ultra fanaticism and stalkery that
has helped me track down the rock stars of my dreams these days.
Here, I pay tribute to the man of my dreams when I was 12.
Thank you, AJ.
My NYE recount of how I got really hammered and burned my left foot off also went live today (Wednesday) on the Tripwire. Nothing like publicly embarrassing yourself for thousands of people nationwide on tales of your drunkenness and night with Moving Units, and then posting pictures of your feet...
Behold obsession #18 - Paul Banks from Interpol. Sure, I love the music and its sentimentality and that hot guitar Kessler action and blah blah blah, but can I get a little fangirl on here really quick?
I'm accustomed to see the Banks in his trademark avaitors/cigarette hanging out of his mouth/occasional smirk, like exhibit A below.
Photographer Wendy Lynch (who has also done some amazing band portraits, like Emily Haines of Metric, Sigur Ros, and Beck) did this new series of promo pictures when Interpol were doing Our Love To Admire press during the summer; it was nice to see Paul in front of a typewriter, which I'm sure he does on tour.
Anyway, guitarist Daniel Kessler just did this interview that got posted on my favorite celebretard blog, and this picture accompanied it:
Wow...no shirt, half-smiling, on the floor, and with cigarette in hand?
Priceless.
This site is a present to me right now. Happy Sunday, hallelujah.
