Did you know "Trapped In The Closet," chapters 1-12, was nominated for a Grammy in 2006?
Shit's weird, I know.
(That so did not stop us that summer when I lived on campus to watch it religiously. VH1 aired chapters 1-6 every night back for a whole week, and we totally parked it on my sofa armed with beer to wash down all those bad puns.)
Once word got out at work today that this used to be my cell phone ring, we started poking around the internet and found out there is gonna be an installment of Chapters 23-32 (yes, you read that right) released this summer. We are so having a screening party for this.
I actually just tried to find his PR agency's information to email them and find out the right date, but then was reminded that he, like, you know, totally messed that up for good. Oops.
For almost a whole year, my ring tone was the section in part one of R. Kelly's "Trapped In The Closet" where he sings "Next thing you know a calls comes through on my cell phone/I tried my best to quickly put it on vibrate" - fucking genius, if you ask me. The looks I'd get on the bus or in the library when my phone went off were so worth the $2.99 I paid for unlimited glory. Needless to say, when my phone took a tumble in a glass of water, my ring tone was no more and my provider didn't offer "Trapped In The Closet" when I got a new phone back in order a few weeks later.
It's been almost two whole years since I first bore witness to the cinematic glory that is this hip-hopera, and I still find it ridiculously amusing. I was working in my last weeks in campus housing the summer Chapters 1-5 debuted, and my best friends and I cracked open beers while we watched R. Kelly pull out Christian values and a beretta. Chapters 6-12 came through the DVD at Christmas time, and the 13-22 series just came out on disc this fall. Yet I still can't put my finger on it; why is this so addicting? Is it the cheating midgets? The fact the whole thing is sung by "Rufus"? That half the time the characters themselves don't even know what's going on?
Who knows. Perusing Facebook during these late night hours at work, I stumbled across one of the funnier parodies of "Trapped In The Closet" from my friend Freddie: poor R and his need for Cheerios.
Side note: I was told that R. Kelly actually performed this on an awards show, by himself, and that it was amazing. If anyone knows where I can find it, please please please let me know.
